The Truth

Chronicles of an Airbnb Hopeful – #5

We nicknamed my daughter “Truth” a while back. For better or worse, she has a gift for “telling it like it is.” After her first overnight visit in NH, she candidly told us we were not even close to being done and it was still a construction zone. Reality check. While we have made tremendous progress, oftentimes, we look around and the amount of remaining work can still feel daunting.

This past month Scott and apprentice, John, completed installation of the tongue and groove knotty pine.  You may not recall, but the original plan did not include redoing the ceilings. It was not until Scott began painting over the popcorn ceiling and it began to crumble, that we realized we needed a plan B. These ceilings truly transformed the space, making it warmer and adding an extra dimension. The work was tedious, but in hindsight, we look back and think how lucky we were when the ceiling began to fall.

The Fun Begins!

After completion of the ceilings, the fun part began-furniture assembly! Scott and company have either been sleeping on a futon amidst a construction zone or in the basement on a mattress on the floor. To finally have a bed with soft sheets and the ability to step out of bed rather than kneeling to get up off the mattress, was like magic.

As you know, I have been scouring marketplace for fantastic furniture deals for months on end. I thought I hit the lottery when I found the perfect set of unique rustic custom bunk beds in Hingham. You can bet that Scott was “thrilled” to be driving from central NH to Hingham for pick up, only to transport them by himself. Let’s just say we realized exactly why these bunks were free. The bunks themselves must have weighed upwards of 250 lbs. Scott and I miraculously worked together ( with the kids help) hoisting them high up over the edge of the cat walk rail and into the upstairs bedroom. The truth. You can bet they aren’t going anywhere!!

Other victories this month included repainting the garage and exterior door, clearing out all brush to reveal bridge, window installation, installation of hanging chandelier, grouting and tiling the bathroom shower and the completion of the upstairs catwalk.

Light fixtures are another easy way to transform and update a space. I absolutely love this chandelier I found on Amazon, as it adds an element of modern class to this rustic chalet.

The original catwalk was not up to code as the rail was around 26 inches high. The handrail is required to be in the vicinity of 36 inches. Scott extended the existing posts and made new ballisters as shown below.

Eurkea! We finally have a shower. Special thanks and shout out to friend Bobby Murgo who helped install and grout the bathroom tile. This was unquestionably a HUGE win, as we have been without a real shower (not including makeshift hose shower) from the beginning. Gross!

Hickory House Reveal

Stay tuned for “The Hickory House Reveal”. We have been working hard to furnish, design and put the finishing touches in place. I kid you not, I have spent countless hours contemplating a shower curtain purchase. You can be sure that every detail in this house has been meticulously designed.

For those of you that are planning a ski weekend away, we are now booking and are live on Airbnb and VRBO! You can also reach out to me directly at karatromblyhomes@gmail.com
